Mixtape No.2

Another mix of a few Brit-pop tracks, rock and dreamy, shoe-gazing pop.

Odd presents

My mum gave me this Donald Trump talking doll for a birthday present. To be fair, it has provided hours of entertainment, especially when you’re a drunk university student. I thought it was the most insane present she got me, but then I remembered that Buzz Lightyear cup thing she bought me when I was 17.

Portraits

Here’s a couple of photos of my friend and photographer JJ taken in a cafe when I was testing out my new Panasonic Lumix camera. She didn’t realise I’d taken them! I’m very pleased with how they turned out.

Police Trains?

I was sitting back relaxing on a long train journey in January when I noticed this. How does that work?!

Reservoir Kids

When I was at school, I sat next to this girl for a year who pulled my hair, stole my recorder and slammed my fingers in my desk.

Then, on the school bus home there was a girl (who I had a crush on) who sang my name over and over again, every single day.

Then there was another girl (who I also had a crush on) who stole my stamp collection when I brought it to school and also shouted at me for listening to a radio comedy whose source of humour was erm, a fat lady. A feminist at 10? Awesome.

Anyway, toughskinned that I was, I ignored them thinking that they just didn’t like me very much. Years later I came across the theory that girls that age - if they hurt you it means they like you, because they’re trying to attract your attention. What?! If this is true, what’s wrong with you? Can’t you show someone you like them by just being nice?

A Queue to a Woo

Waiting in a queue, the pleasant-looking brunette in the duffel-coat behind smiled at me. My arms clutched two tubes of posters I had picked with my sharp art-critic’s eye two hours earlier. I smiled back. We got talking. The conversation eventually swung round to my posters. What’s in the tubes, she asked. Look, I’ll show you, I said.

I popped one of them open before I remembered it was probably a bad idea. I unwrapped the poster as calmly as I could. It was the one with the two girls kissing. I could feel an overwhelming coldness suddenly emanating from her, even though the sun was bursting through the trees. Oh, she said shortly. You know, I had you pegged as a Van Gogh lover or something.

Yes, I am! I protested. I also like Monet, romanticism and I’ll show you, in this other tube (unpopping it) is quite a beautiful Pre-Raphaelite painting.

Too late. I’d lost her.

BlackBlack

The picture above is probably the most normal picture of BlackBlack you’ll probably see…

Ok, a couple months ago I discover a great sounding, incredibly obscure band called BlackBlack. I paid a visit to their website, which was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced - check out here why! Genius. Can’t they just go straight to page 1?

Anyway, their song Emerald Forest is lovely. I ran across a video on Youtube interviewing BlackBlack on tour in Sao Paolo. Diva said something about her sister Lola not being with the band that day because she was covering for the drummer in The Like. The Like?! One of my favourite bands! I almost jumped out of my chair.

So I decided to look at their Wikipedia entry. One of the members is called Alex Greenwald, only he performs in BlackBlack under the name Clark Schädelkopf. I kid you not.

Hmm, Alex Greenwald sounds very familiar… clicky on his Wikipedia page. And a penny dropped. Lead singer of Phantom Planet? No wa-

That time I did fall off my chair.
